China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Thursday called for long-term prosperity and stability in Hong Kong and Macao, and hoped the two special administrative regions (SAR) would make further contribution to the modernization drive of the interior regions.

Jia, who was re-elected chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) on Thursday, made the remarks at a reception held in honor of CPPCC members from Hong Kong and Macao who are attending the First Session of the 11th CPPCC National Committee in Beijing.

He said political advisors from the two SARs put forth constructive proposals at the session regarding China's social and economic development, peaceful reunification of the motherland, prosperity and stability in Hong Kong and Macao, and work of the political advisory body.

Jia said he hoped CPPCC members from Hong Kong and Macao will continue to abide by the basic laws of the two SARs, support their SAR governments and be united with the broad masses of compatriots in Hong Kong and Macao.

He also encouraged the political advisors to focus on boosting regional economic development, improving the people's livelihood, advancing democracy and maintaining harmony in order to sustain long-term prosperity and stability in Hong Kong and Macao, and make greater contribution to the reform, opening-up and modernization drive of the interior regions.

The reception was co-hosted by the general office of the CPPCC National Committee and the United Front Work Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).
