Reunion (or Chong Feng in Chinese) was officially announced as the theme song of the 16th Asian Games during a release ceremony in Guangzhou on September 30.
A ceremony is held at Guangzhou TV Station to release the theme song of the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games.
The song has emerged as the favourite among three shortlists in an online poll co-hosted by the Ceremonies & Cultural Events Department of the Guangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee, Guangzhou TV and Dayoo.com. It has received 1,624,315 votes, followed by Sunshine Again and Glorious Presence with 1,586,265 and 1,504,154 votes respectively.
The music composer of Reunion is Lao Zai (Wu Liqun) and the lyrics writer is Xu Rongkai. The lyrics have been translated into English by Yang Zhenning (Chen-Ning Franklin Yang), a Chinese-American physicist and Nobel Prize winner, and his wife Weng Fan. The name Reunion indicates that the Asian Games is not only a sporting event but also a grand quadrennial gathering of friends from different parts of Asia.
Wang Xiaoling, Member of the Standing Committee of the Guangzhou Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Director of the Publicity Department of the Guangzhou Municipal CPC Committee, attended the release ceremony and unveiled the winner.
Over the past three years, the solicitation campaign for Asian Games songs has received more than 1,600 entries, among which, 36 were released as selected songs for the Games. A 10-song shortlist for the theme song had been announced before Reunion, Sunshine Again and Glorious Presence became the final candidates in August 2010.
Lyrics of Reunion
Myriad rivers and mountains
How far apart
The Pearl River curves out her hand, pulling together
The mountains in the distance
The gathering across the sea
It's hard to say goodbye on a verdant fair ground
Asia, where the sun has risen
Asia, where civilisations were born
Here is the most beautiful
Here is the most bright
We meet again
Regardless of black or blue eyes
Rush to reap our splendour
Raise our pride above our heads
Asia, where the sun rises
Asia, where civilisations were born
Asia is the most beautiful paradise
Beneath the shining sun
