HISTORICAL MOMENT: Beichuan County in Sichuan Province suffers the hardest hit in the Wenchuan earthquake on May 12, 2008 (YANG LEI) |
The Wenchuan earthquake measured 8.0 on the Richter scale occurred at 2:28 p.m. on May 12, 2008. Wenchuan of Sichuan Province was the epicenter of the devastating quake.
The earthquake killed 69,277 people and injured 374,176, with 18,222 listed as missing. It also left about 4.8 million people homeless.
Thanks to three years of reconstruction work, the regions affected by the Wenchuan earthquake have not only fully recover, but also embarked on the sustainable devleopment path. Among the many projects that injected momentum into the rapid reconstruction process, a majority were undertaken with assistance from provinces and cities across the country.
