TAC established a committee on translation theories and education in 1995. For more than a decade, the committee worked extensively with relevant agencies, experts and scholars in the field of translation theories and education, actively organized various academic forums on translation theories, and played a vital role in pushing ahead the development of translation theories and education.

Literature Translation and Publication

In more than half a century since the founding of the People's Republic of China, several generations of translators in China have translated thousands of literary works in more than 100 countries and regions for Chinese readers. The works cover the classics and popular books of many nations from ancient to modern times. The translation of such works has invariably introduced various literature schools to the world and greatly promoted the dissemination of world literature and culture. In recent years translators and publishers of foreign literary works, such as the People's Literature Publication House, Shanghai Translation Publishing House and Yilin Press, have flourished.

In 2006, the People's Literature Publication House published a total of 861 book titles (327 new and 534 reprinted). Foreign literary works accounted for 40 percent of the total, including novels, dramas, poetry, literature theory and research studies.

In 2006, the Shanghai Translation Publishing House published a total of 603 book titles (314 new and 289 reprinted), of which 303 were foreign literary works, accounting for 50.2 percent of the total, including novels and literary theories.

In 2006, 655 book titles were published (197 new and 458 reprinted) by the Yilin Press, of which 247 were foreign literary works, accounting for 38
