At 2:30 p.m. on December 18, a special music class was held at Duancun School in north China's Hebei Province.

Some 20 performers from the Beijing-based China Philharmonic Orchestra performed for more than 200 local pupils and their parents. Earlier that day, students learning music received face-to-face guidance from the professionals.

This is the first time that the China Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the country's most prominent art institutions, offered education to rural pupils. "We are deeply moved by their passion and interest in the arts. Today is just the beginning. It is our responsibility to contribute to arts education in China," said Liu Jun, head of the orchestra.

Since March this year, Beijing Hefeng Art Foundation has offered free weekend arts classes focusing on ballet, musical instruments, drama, choir singing and painting as a complement to the school curriculum in Duancun.
