Power Goes With the Blow | A maritime patrol boat passes a line of windmills in the East China Sea off Shanghai on February 22. As part of Asia's first sea-wind power plant, 34 windmills adjacent to the world longest cross-sea Donghai Bridge have had their installation completed and are expected to serve the Shanghai World Expo with environmentally friendly power from its beginning on May 1. Each of the wind turbines is about 90 meters high and weighs 400 tons, with rotating blades about 45 meters long. The 2.3-billion-yuan (US$336.9-million) plant will generate 260 million kilowatt hours of electricity yearly, enough for about 170,000 families. Construction of the plant began in late 2007. Two patrol boats sent by the Yangshan Port Maritime Authority are in charge of their security and are on duty around the clock (SHANGHAIDAILY) |
