Folk Arts in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region
A folk artist presents shadow play in the Zhenbeipbao West Film Studio, in Yinchuan, capital of northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, May 5, 2008. Shadow play is a traditional folk performing art in China, in which performers play leather puppets behind a white cloth to depict a story. Shadow puppets are made from high-quality donkey's hide, shadow play are projected onto a thin curtain by background lighting, performers manipulate sticks to move figures behind the curtain while local music and songs are dubbed. As part of tourism activity, the shadow puppet-making process receives warm welcome among visitors at home and abroad. (Xinhua)
