Kosovo Officially Declares Independence From Serbia
Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu (C), Prime Minister Hashim Thaci (L) and parliament speaker Jakup Krasniqi (R) debut at a news conference in Pristina, February 17, 2008. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia on Sunday. However, Serbian President Boris Tadic in Belgrade said Serbia would never recognize Kosovo as an independent state. China expressed grave concern over Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao on Monday. "China calls on the two sides of Serbia and Kosovo to continue to seek a proper solution through negotiation within the framework of international law, and the international community should create favorable conditions for this," said Liu.
