Some 400 migrant workers in a reconstruction site in Jinan, Shandong Province, share a huge moon cake measuring 1.68 meters on September 24, 2007 one day ahead of the Mid-autumn Festival. The Mid-autumn Festival, which falls on the fifteenth day of the eighth month in the lunar calendar, symbolizes the reunion of family in traditional Chinese culture. The round moon cakes, regularly measuring about three inches in diameter and one and a half inches in thickness, resembled Western fruitcakes in taste and consistency. These cakes were made with melon seeds, lotus seeds, almonds, minced meats, bean paste, orange peels and lard. People in different places follow various customs, but all show their love and longing for a better life. Today people will enjoy the full moon and eat moon cakes on that day. (Xinhua) |
