The "Berlin Declaration" aimed at reconciling Europe's half a billion citizens with the future of the European project, lies on the table after it was signed by the President of the European Parliament Hans-Gert Poettering, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose country currently holds the EU presidency, and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, March 25, 2007 at the German Historical Museum in Berlin, during the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome which laid the foundation for the EU. The 27 European Union leaders endorsed the declaration aimed at helping the EU past the impasse over its constitution, as the bloc marks the 50th anniversary of its founding treaty in Berlin.
