Disabled Athletes Return Glorious
 

The valiant Chinese team, with 39 medals from the '96 Atlanta Paralympic Games, was warmly greeted and welcomed at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on August 29.

Zhao Jihua, deputy head of the team, told participants including senior state officials at the ceremony that the team had brought home 16 gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze, and 11 world records through intensive competition.

"Our team has written a brilliant new page in the history of sports for disabled people in China," said State Councillor Peng Peiyun, "and their outstanding performance and achievements at the Games have fully demonstrated their spirit of determination to improve themselves.

"This provides inspiration for the country's 60 million people with disabilities and for the whole Chinese nation."

China sent 37 athletes to this year's Games. Aging from 17 to 41,they participated in 6 of the Games' 17 events.

Some 3,500 athletes and 2,500 coaches and officials from more than 120 countries and regions participated in the Games.
