Once upon a time the qipao was the national costume of Chinese women, but today this most feminine of all garments is struggling to survive
By ZAN JIFANG

"It seems that the qipao has moved far from our daily life. The clothes for women in our time are dominated by jeans, short skirts or comfortable casual suits," said Yang Shanghong, a professor of sociology at Chongqing University in southwest China.

But actually since the 1980s and 1990s, the qipao has been seen in a new guise, mainly as the traditional dress used by young girls serving at grand ceremonies or waitresses in big hotels or restaurants.

This kind of qipao all have a similar appearance-poorly made from cheap material, bright in color with too high side slits. This has greatly damaged the noble image of the qipao in the hearts and minds of people. Some young girls dare not wear a qipao in case they get mistaken for one of these service industry workers, even if they like the qipao style.

"In my wardrobe, there is no qipao," said Zhao Jinli, a young woman employed at an advertisement company. "I don't like wearing a qipao as it looks outdated and makes me feel like a girl greeting guests at the door of a restaurant."

But the qipao should not be something forgotten or neglected by contemporary young women, said Yang. This was echoed by Wang Jinqiao, owner and founder of Beijing GEGE Qipao Co. Ltd., one of the leading qipao manufacturers in China.

Ultimately, it's all about how something from the past can fit into the present. "Traditional Chinese costumes are the continuation of our traditional culture, which is needed and can be completely integrated into modern life," said Jin Taijun.

She said that no garment would endure if it was not updated from time to time, and the qipao is no exception. "We should provide qipao dresses for formal occasions but also in a more casual style for daily life," she said, confident that a combination of national style and fashionable touches will prolong the appealing charm of the qipao for many years to come.

Tips for Wearing qipao

- Regardless of your height--choose a qipao that just covers your knees rather than a longer version.

- Choose the best quality material you can afford.

- No need to wear your hair up--try a short rakish style instead

- Although a pearl necklace and jade bracelet are traditional partners of the qipao, a fashionable small wristwatch and other modern accessories can create a surprising effect.

- Don't buy a finished product from an assembly line. Find yourself a good tailor so the qipao is designed to fit your body like a glove.
