Xinjiang, a vast region in the northwest of China, has been a dream destination for travelers around the world, thanks to its magnificent natural scenery, diverse cultures and profound historical heritage.

Before embarking on a journey through Xinjiang, thorough preparation is key. Passport holders of many countries currently do not need visas for stays of up to 30 days, but if your itinerary includes border areas such as Tashikuergan (Tashkurgan or Taxkorgan), check with your local embassy or consulate about whether you'll need to apply for a border permit in advance.

Xinjiang has large temperature differences between day and night. From May to September, pack short-sleeved shirts, shorts, long-sleeved jacket, and thin sweaters to cope with the daytime heat and the coolness in the mountains at night. After October, you'll need to bring thick down jackets, warm pants and other cold-proof equipment. In addition, high-SPF sunscreen, moisturizing skin care products and thermos flasks are essential items. If you plan to bring a drone for photography, always learn about the no-fly regulations in scenic areas before you start using it.

There are several points that will help you adapt to and enjoy local life in Xinjiang. Although Xinjiang officially uses Beijing Time, there is a time difference of about two hours from Beijing and the local times for breakfast, lunch and dinner are generally later. Adjust your biological clock in time to make the most of the long daylight hours here.

In terms of food, Xinjiang cuisine prominently features beef and mutton, as well as wheat-based foods such as noodles and flatbreads. Specialties are grilled lamb skewers, mutton pilaf, and a spicy chicken stew with noodles called Dapanji, or big-plate chicken. When dining in halal restaurants, you must respect local religious beliefs and eating habits and refrain from bringing in non-halal foods.

For accommodation, there are a wide variety of choices in big cities and popular scenic areas, while in remote areas, there are mostly homestays or farmhouses. During the peak tourist season, it is necessary to make online reservations. Airplane, train and road travel are all used in different parts of Xinjiang and shuttle buses are usually used inside scenic areas. For special means of transportation like horse or camel treks, please choose established and well-recognized operators.

Xinjiang is an area with multiple ethnic groups and religious beliefs. When entering religious places such as mosques, dress appropriately and remain quiet. During your visits to Xinjiang's wilderness areas, pay attention to safety and environmental protection. Xinjiang has a fragile ecological environment, so during your trip, please do not litter or damage the vegetation.

During peak seasons, popular scenic areas are crowded with tourists. It is recommended to book tickets in advance on official websites or online platforms. When hiking in the mountains, follow the signs and remain on marked trails and in designated areas. When going to high-altitude regions, make preparations for possible altitude sickness and seek medical help or go to lower-altitude areas if you feel unwell.

Being a well-informed and responsible traveler is the best way to enjoy your time in Xinjiang. With more than 1.6 million square km to explore, there are practically endless experiences to surprise and delight visitors.
