Since Donald Trump took office as U.S. president in January, he has adopted a series of unconventional policies out of his "America first" foreign policy approach. Three days after taking power, Trump announced the withdrawal of the U.S. from the U.S.-dominated Trans-Pacific Partnership. Despite wide criticism at home and abroad, the Trump administration quit the Paris climate agreement on June 1. On October 12, the U.S. withdrew from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization by claiming that there is "continuing anti-Israel bias" at the organization. On December 2, Trump withdrew the U.S. from the United Nations Global Compact on Migration, declaring it undermines the nation's interests. On December 5, Trump announced that the United States formally recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, eliciting widespread protests around the globe. The above series of policy changes demonstrate the Trump administration's isolationist and assertive attitude in world affairs, which has brought new challenges to global governance.
