This year, the world observes the 80th anniversary of the United Nations. Born from the Allied victory in World War II, the UN was founded on its Charter to build a new international order dedicated to peace and cooperation. Over the past eight decades, it has become the world's most universal, representative and authoritative intergovernmental organization, playing a central role in global governance.
As a founding member, China has been an active participant in this endeavor. The nation has worked to advance human wellbeing and has made many contributions in areas essential to our shared future, including global governance, sustainable development, climate action and poverty reduction.
At the UN, China champions fairness, justice and the legitimate rights of developing countries. Through initiatives including the vision of a community with a shared future for humanity, the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, the Global Civilizations Initiative and the Global Governance Initiative, China has shared its development experiences as global public goods.
The inclusion of the vision of a community with a shared future for humanity in UN General Assembly resolutions for eight consecutive years marks a pivotal leap, transforming "China's proposition" into "international consensus" and embedding it systematically into the core of global governance.
As the second largest contributor to the UN regular and peacekeeping budgets and the top provider of peacekeeping personnel among the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, China delivers substantial practical support. Its commitment is further demonstrated through decisive global actions: Achieving the UN's poverty reduction target a decade ahead of schedule in 2020, a milestone that accelerated progress worldwide, and driving the green transition with ambitious carbon goals and leadership in clean energy.
These contributions have infused the UN with renewed vitality and strengthened its capacity to address global challenges.
Today's new challenges, from geopolitical conflicts to climate change and AI governance, are straining the multilateral system. We must uphold the international order with the UN at its core, grounded in the principles of the UN Charter. We look to this international body to harness the lessons of the past, usher in a new era of multilateralism and advance a vision of global governance that is truly fair and equitable. BR
