China's growing enthusiasm for sports and fitness is bringing about a significant shift in consumption habits. The sports industry, buoyed by policy support, capital influx and technological innovation, has leaped from the competitive arena to become one of the country's primary sources of growth.

The momentum was accelerated on August 30, when the State Council issued a guideline to unleash the consumption potential of the sports sector and spur its high-quality development. Hailed by industry insiders as a blueprint for the future, the document sets an ambitious target: By 2030, China intends to cultivate a cohort of sports enterprises and events with global influence, propelling the domestic sports industry to a scale of 7 trillion yuan ($980 billion).

This vision is being realized through composite consumption models. The integration of culture, sports and tourism has given rise to formats like "sports plus scenic spots," "sports plus exhibitions" and "sports plus shopping districts." A single marathon event now activates the entire consumption chain—encompassing food, accommodation, transportation, sightseeing, shopping and entertainment.

Furthermore, technology is fundamentally reshaping the sector. Smart wearables, AI-powered personal training and cloud platforms for sporting events are transforming physical activity into digital assets, creating new opportunities for social sharing and secondary consumption. In this new economy, sports consumption is not just an activity; it is a force actively reshaping the very character of the urban arena.

The booming market for versatile urban camping gear is a clear indicator that city life is no longer defined solely by skyscrapers and crowds, but is increasingly embracing leisure and a touch of natural romance.

However, this growth must be managed responsibly, avoiding the pitfalls of unsustainable development, such as the "come-and-go" phenomenon that leaves behind little more than garbage. Local governments must strengthen their guidance for hosting international events to enhance organizational capacity, directly addressing the operational challenges that have hampered the sports industry in recent years. Sustainable success hinges on this commitment to quality and order.
