From Isolation to Openness

While global perceptions of Xizang often focus on its iconic imagery—the Roof of the World, the Potala Palace and ancient temples, the region's most profound modern narrative is one of remarkable human development.

Since the establishment of Xizang Autonomous Region on September 1, 1965, the region has undergone a historic transformation. It has progressed from a state of feudal autocracy and isolation to one of economic prosperity, social democracy and openness. Sixty years of regional ethnic autonomy on the plateau have facilitated a leap forward in human rights and created a verifiable development miracle.

Over the past six decades, Xizang has achieved countless milestones in economic and social development. Its GDP amounted to 276.5 billion yuan ($38.5 billion) in 2024, 155 times the 1965 number. Its per-capita GDP exceeded 75,000 yuan ($10,500) last year.

Xizang's economy, once underdeveloped, is now thriving through tailored industries like agriculture, animal husbandry, clean energy, cultural tourism and the digital economy. Its infrastructure has been transformed: Once reliant on narrow paths, the region is now connected by comprehensive rail, road and air networks. Furthermore, modern 5G cellular networks and high-speed fiber-optic Internet connections that transmit data at over 1 gigabit per second now cover all county seats and major townships.

Over the past 60 years, rapid development has dramatically improved livelihoods in Xizang. The region has transitioned from widespread poverty to moderate prosperity, with life expectancy more than doubling from 35.5 years in 1951 to 72.5 years in 2024. Social programs now provide a strong foundation: Nine-year compulsory education enrollment reaches 96.9 percent, and over 95 percent of residents are covered by basic pension and medical insurance schemes.

Simultaneously, ecological protection has been prioritized with forest coverage rising from less than 1 percent in 1965 to 12.31 percent in 2024. Furthermore, cultural rights are protected. The Tibetan language is widely used and is the first ethnic minority language in China with an international standard.

Today, on a new foundation of prosperity, Xizang is forging a future of lasting stability and high-quality growth.
