Liu Shiwen
Liu Shiwen won the women's singles title at the World Table Tennis Championships on April 27 in Budapest, Hungary. An all fired-up Liu, who didn't concede a point in one set of her semifinal against her more heralded teammate Ding Ning, beat fellow Chinese Chen Meng. It was Liu's second gold medal in Budapest following her mixed doubles victory with Xu Xin on April 26. Chinese National Table Tennis Team bagged five champions during this world championships. Although Liu has four Table Tennis World Cup singles titles to her name, she had never won the singles title at the World Championships or the Olympic Games. "This is my sixth world championships and third singles final," said the 28-year-old. "If I would have lost this time, I may not have another chance." Born in northeast China's Liaoning Province in 1991, Liu started to play table tennis at the age of 5 and went to Guangzhou to play table tennis at the age of 7. |
