Famous Chinese actress Fan Bingbing, who has featured in dozens of movies and TV series, has been ordered to pay taxes and fines worth 883 million yuan ($127 million) over tax evasion.

Tax authorities said they started investigating Fan in early June after receiving information from members of the public that Fan had evaded tax through contract frauds.

In a publicly released letter of apology, the 37-year-old said she felt ashamed that she committed tax evasion. "I have realized that as a public figure, I should have observed the law, setting a good example for society and the industry," she said.

The State Taxation Administration said it would launch a new campaign to regulate tax payments in the film and TV industry.
