COVER STORY

When Life Becomes Sci-Fi highlights how science and technology has empowered China’s battle against the novel coronavirus disease. As Chinese medical scientists step up efforts on prevention and control of the epidemic, the outbreak has also created more sci-fi scenes with new technologies including AI and big data applied.

BUSINESS

Powering Their World shares stories about how Power Construction Corp. of China (PowerChina), a state-owned engineering giant creates careers for women around the globe. Through providing professional training, it has helped local women find jobs and become financially independent.

FORUM

Should SCI Theses Criterion Be Revoked? discusses a recent notice which has stirred a debate in China’s universities. The notice stated that the publication of theses in Science Citation Index (SCI) journals should not be directly linked to the professional evaluation or recruitment of teaching staff. Some people believe that SCI is an excellent evaluation system that keeps China on par with international scientific research levels. However, others believe that the overemphasis on this system seems to do more harm than good.
