Hello and welcome to the 11th issue of Beijing Review. (WEI YAO) COVER STORY New Start, New Targets looks at the latest measures unveiled in this year’s government work report. It concludes the work from the previous year and presents a plan for the year ahead for developing the economy and improving people’s livelihood. WORLD Lessons from Belt and Road analyzes the opportunity for the world to learn from China’s experience from reform and opening up. One outcome has been economic growth and transformation of the ideas China took in during this era. The other outcome is the Belt and Road Initiative, which offers a broad framework from which others can learn, much as China did over the past 40 years. FORUM How Can China Encourage More Childbirths looks at discussions about reluctance to have a second child under the two-child policy, contributing to a decreasing fertility rate. Reasons discussed include changes in young couple’s attitudes to career and family life, the cost of raising a child today and the future life the child would have and difficulty in finding childcare while parents work.
