Bold Steps, Bright Future takes a look at the world’s first international import expo held at the national level, which took place in Shanghai in early November. The article gives details of President Xi’s speech where he lauded the expo as a key element of China’s upgraded economy. The expo was held to encourage imports to China, acting not only as a catalyst for economic growth but also as a symbolic message that the world needs open trade borders. The event was attended by over 400,000 global purchasers with over 5,000 products making their debut at the inaugural event.

On the Way looks at Westlake University and its ambitions to become a world-class educational institution. Westlake is following broader patterns of opening up within China and is striving to become a leader in the scientific and technology fields. It is one of the few private universities in the country and is funded by a foundation.

CULTURE 

Fantastic Novels laments the passing of the esteemed author Jin Yong. Born in Haining in 1924, Jin Yong died on October 30 in Hong Kong where he had lived for many years. Famed for his wuxia book, Jin Yong’s martial arts-themed books are credited for encouraging many young children to start reading. Many also consider his books to be a pillar of modern Chinese culture. He famously quipped he was not interested in being remembered only that his books had an enduring legacy. Soon after his death was announced, sales in Jin Yong’s books spiked dramatically.
