Hello and welcome to the 5th issues of Beijing Review. Photo designed by Wang Yajuan COVER STORY Good Omens is about China’s rebounding economic growth. After six years of slightly decreasing growth, the GDP growth rate surged ahead of the official target. The positive momentum included millions of new urban jobs, supply-side structural reforms and increased investment, with new growth drivers flourishing in 2017. WORLD War and Peace focuses on developments on the Korean Peninsula and whether they herald the start of an era of peace or beginning of a new conflict. With opportunities presented by the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, diplomatic dialogues have begun that might thaw the icy relations between the two Koreas, but threats by the U.S. and some of its allies are pushing relations to a new Cold War. CULTURE The Plot Thickens is a story about weakness exposed in China’s film industry last year, despite several blockbusters. Although the Chinese New Year holiday week saw seven movie releases set a new earnings record, box office earnings stumbled over the following months. Viewers are tiring of Hollywood films and are finding more quality content in “dark horse” Chinese films. Copyedited by Pamela Tobey Comments to ffli@bjreview.com |
