Hello and welcome to the 10th issue of Beijing Review.
Photo from Xinhua News Agency NPC & CPPCC Close-up A Plan for the New Era is about the Government Work Report delivered at the first session of the 13th National People’s Congress. It reviews China’s achievements over the past five years and presents policy direction for social and economic development over the coming year as well as current challenges China faces. The aim is for high quality development and deepening reforms, putting quality before quantity in economic growth and improving long-term competitiveness. NPC & CPPCC Close-up From Speed to Quality addresses issues contained in the Report on the Work of the Government in an interview with Hu Angang, Director of the Centre for China Studies at Tsinghua University. The goals of the report align both with the goal of building a moderately prosperous society in all aspects by 2020 and with China’s contemporary economic reality in its shift from speed to quality. Innovation, green development, global market development and balance in economic development will push China forward and allow a better life and a share in the benefits of reform and development for all people. World Friend, Not Foe analyzes new developments that put China-U.S. relations under strain. Recent developments and Washington’s hardline approach to China have soured relations and may present challenges in 2018, but the general structure of bilateral relations remains basically unchanged. China continues emphasizing the benefits of cooperation instead of confrontation to solve problems between the two countries. Copyedited by Pamela Tobey Comments to linan@bjreview.com |
