The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) on Wednesday announced a key development in its human spaceflight programme, naming two astronaut candidates who will undergo advanced training in China.
Khurram Daud and Muhammad Zeeshan Ali are set to depart for the People’s Republic of China to begin training at the Astronaut Centre of China. Officials said the move marked a significant step in Pakistan’s space exploration efforts and placed the country among a limited number of nations pursuing human spaceflight capabilities. Under the collaboration, Pakistan is preparing for its first participation in a mission to the China Space Station, currently planned for launch in late 2026. A Pakistani astronaut is expected to serve as a payload expert on the mission, where they will carry out scientific experiments in microgravity.
These experiments will focus on areas such as material science, fluid physics, life sciences and biotechnology, with potential applications in climate resilience, food security and industrial development.
On the occasion, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif commended Suparco’s efforts and termed the initiative a milestone for the country’s space ambitions. He also highlighted Pakistan’s close cooperation with China, describing the collaboration as a reflection of strong bilateral ties.
