China's export controls on rare earths consistent with int'l practice

China took export controls on rare earths and related items in accordance with the law, which are consistent with international practice, foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on October 15.

Lin made the comment in response to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer's remarks saying that whether the additional 100 percent tariffs on Chinese goods kick in on Nov. 1 or sooner depends on what China does. Greer also said Chinese officials made contradictory statements about the latest rare earth export restrictions.

Lin said competent authorities have made clear China's position on the export control measures on rare earths and related items, noting that China took the measures to better safeguard world peace and regional stability, and fulfill non-proliferation and other international obligations.

"China's position has been consistent and clear," the spokesperson said, adding that it is the United States that asks for talks while threatening high tariffs and new restrictions, which is not the right way to deal with China.

China urges the United States to correct its wrong approach as early as possible and address relevant issues through dialogue and consultation on the basis of equality, respect and mutual benefit, Lin said.
