Lai Ching-te slammed for hindering exchange, cooperation between two sides of Taiwan Strait

A Chinese mainland spokesperson on September 24 condemned recent remarks made by Lai Ching-te, the leader of the Taiwan region, saying Lai's remarks once again demonstrated his attempt to hinder exchange and cooperation between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Chen Binhua, the spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said that since Lai took office, he has stubbornly maintained a separatist "Taiwan independence" stance and pushed for an economic decoupling between the mainland and Taiwan.

"His words and actions have seriously damaged the interests of both enterprises and people on the island. If he does not repent, he will only bring more harm to the island," Chen said.

The spokesperson warned the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities that no matter how they attempt to collude with external forces to instigate separatism, they cannot change the fact that Taiwan is a part of China.

A host of documents with international legal effect, including the 1943 Cairo Declaration, the 1945 Potsdam Proclamation and the 1945 Japanese Instrument of Surrender, collectively reaffirm China's sovereignty over Taiwan, Chen said.

He noted that the 1992 Consensus, which embodies the one-China principle, is the political foundation for cross-Strait dialogue and consultation.

"The DPP authorities, while claiming willingness to engage in dialogue and exchange, are vigorously spreading 'Taiwan independence' separatist sentiment," he said.

Such contradictory behavior indicates that the DPP authorities have no sincerity at all in restoring dialogue and consultation with the mainland, the spokesperson said.
