President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Abdulla Shahid reiterated on August 4 that the UNGA abides by the Resolution 2758.

Commenting on Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, the UNGA president said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua via email that the UNGA president's views "align with" that of the UN secretary-general.

"The General Assembly will abide by the relevant resolution on the matter," the office said, adding the Resolution 2758 recognizes the People's Republic of China (PRC) as the only legitimate representative of China to the UN.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday affirmed the world body's one-China policy as Pelosi's Taiwan visit has created tensions.

"Our position is very clear. We abide by General Assembly resolutions, by the one-China policy, and that is the orientation that we have in everything we do," said the UN chief.

The UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758 in 1971, which decides to restore the lawful rights of the PRC in the UN and to recognize the representatives of the PRC government as the only legitimate representatives of China to the United Nations.
