On the occasion of Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Peru, China Today launched a special issue on November 20 in Peru National Library in Lima, Peru's capital, commemorating the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Peru.

The two countries established diplomatic relations on November 2, 1971, and after that, the bilateral relations have been developing steadily with frequent high-level exchange visits and increasing economic and cultural cooperation.

In April 2009, China and Peru signed a Free Trade Agreement, and since then, China has become Peru's largest trading partner and largest export market. The two countries maintain increasing exchanges in the fields of culture, science, education and tourism. A sign of their expanding economic and trade cooperation, the two countries upgraded their relations from a strategic partnership to a comprehensive strategic partnership in April 2013.

China Today's special issue was launched with the goal of further promoting the friendship between China and Latin America. The special issue stresses that China attaches great importance to the development of Sino-Peruvian relations on the basis of mutually beneficial cooperation.

The Spanish edition of China Today is the only Spanish-language journal published in China since the 1960s, and it has been continuously developing its foreign promotion work in Latin America. A branch office of China Today was established in Mexico City in October 2004 to publish the Latin American version, and a representative office was established in Lima in 2010. The publication covers all the Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America and has become an important window for Latin American readers to understand China. In 2013, the magazine was named among China's top 100 journals.
