A hospital that gave ineffective cancer treatment to a patient who turned to it after seeing promotion on Chinese search engine Baidu has been put under investigation.

Wei Zexi, 21, died last month of a rare form of cancer after undergoing an experimental form of treatment at the Second Hospital of the Beijing Armed Police Corps (SHBAPC).

The National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC), and the health bureaus under both the Logistic Support Department of the Central Military Commission and the Logistic Support Department of the Armed Police Force, are now investigating the hospital, a NHFPC spokesperson said.

Before he died, Wei expressed anger at the SHBAPC and Baidu in an online post, accusing them of false advertising in claiming a high success rate for the treatment.

The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said on May 2 that it had sent investigators to Baidu. The investigators are from the CAC, the State Administration of Industry and Commerce, and the NHFPC.
