Held on the 94th anniversary of the September 18 Incident that many historians consider to be the start of Japan's 14-year invasion of China (1931-45), the event presented nine books and periodicals related to the Nanjing Massacre, which claimed the lives of 300,000 Nanjing residents over the course of six weeks in winter 1937-38,during the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, sending a message to the world about the need to firmly safeguard historical justice and build a better future together. The event was hosted by the CICG Center for the Americas, with support from the Foreign Languages Press (FLP) and New World Press.

During the livestream, Liu Yunyun, Associate Editor in Chief of the CICG Center for the Americas, recommended English newsweekly Beijing Reviews special issue commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. The issue features an on-the-spot report by a Beijing Review journalist who covered the September 3 military parade in Tian'anmen Square, and in-depth interpretations of the historical events penned by Chinese and international scholars, including Wang Chaoguang of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Harvard University Professor Rana Mitter. It also carries stories about descendants of international friends such as Thomas Rabe, grandson of German business man John Rabe who co-created the Nanjing Safety Zone in winter 1937-38, highlighting the ongoing legacy of historical memory.

Li Li, a managing editor with the Foreign Languages Press, introduces Studies on the Nanjing Massacre (WEI YAO)

Published by the FLP, Studies on the Nanjing Massacre introduces Chinese academic research on the massacre for overseas audiences. Distributed through CICG's global network to numerous universities and institutions, the publication has become an important resource for international scholars.

Two newly released books in September, Tokyo Trial: Evidence and Judgment of the Nanjing Massacre and Nanjing Trial: Evidence and Judgment of the Nanjing Massacre, reconstruct the historical truth from both legal and historical perspectives. Based on original court transcripts and judgment documents, they form a powerful rebuttal to distortions and denials of history, Li Li, a managing editor with the FLP said.

Rabe and China tells the heroic efforts of John Rabe and the other expats who established the Nanjing Safety Zone and saved 250,000 Chinese lives. What War Means: The Japanese Terror in China draws on records of international witnesses to document in detail the atrocities committed by Japanese troops during the Nanjing Massacre. Meanwhile,Chang Zhiqiang's LifeA Survivor of the Nanjing Massacre is the first work in China to document the personal history of a survivor, preserving this unforgotten chapter from a first-person perspective.

Nanjing Massacre: A Complete Record of the Japanese Fascist Crimes in 1937 is a seminal work by He Jianming, former Vice Chairman of the China Writers Association. According to Jia Ruina, Deputy Director of Literature and Art Editorial Department at New World Press, the book is the first comprehensive account of the massacre written from a Chinese perspective, integrating multiple historical sources and breaking beyond traditional narratives. The book contains Japanese soldiers’ diaries and testimonies of expat witnesses, offering a fuller presentation of the historical truth.

During the livestream, guests also addressed questions from viewers regarding book availability, translation challenges and international reception.

This year observes the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. The war in China was a major theater in the East during the World Anti-Fascist War, making an indelible contribution to the eventual victory over fascism. The Nanjing Massacre, one of the most tragic chapters of that history, must never be forgotten. Yet, the international community still lacks a full understanding of the tremendous sacrifices and contributions China made in this struggle.

Since August 15, the CICG Center for the Americas, together with the Publicity Department of Nanjing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders, has launched a series of events themed Truths of the Past, Voices of the Present. The livestream was an integral part of this initiative.
