The proposed China-Nepal cross-border railway will boost economic growth in the landlocked Himalayan country by enhancing connectivity both internally and with China, and enabling Nepali products better access to China’s market, according to Bishu Pukar Shrestha, Nepal's ambassador to China.

At a press briefing held by the Embassy of Nepal in Beijing on August 29, Shrestha expressed his hope that the construction of the China-Nepal cross-border railway, which is much-anticipated, will facilitate bilateral trade and cultural exchange.

The project, which is part of the Trans-Himalayan Multi-Dimensional Connectivity Network, an integral part of the Belt and Road Initiative, was agreed upon by China’s State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Nepali Foreign Minister Narayan Khadka when they met in Qingdao, Shandong Province, on August 10. The line will connect the Nepalese capital Kathmandu and Shigatse in southwest China’s Tibet.

China will mobilize its aid funds for Nepal to support the feasibility study for the railway and will send experts to conduct surveys in Nepal this year, according to a statement released by China’s Foreign Ministry on August 11.
