| Three-year anti-crime drive boosts security, public trust in China | |

Among the 144 countries and regions surveyed to assess the state of crime, people’s confidence in police and sense of security, China ranked third, following Singapore and Turkmenistan, according to the Gallup Global Law and Order Index released on October 27.
In January 2018, China started a three-year campaign to combat organized crime and local bullies. The drive has improved social security and law enforcement.
A notorious gang leader involved in organized crime, rape and other crimes was brought to justice last year. Sun Xiaoguo from Yunnan Province, southwest China, was sentenced to death in 1998 for rape, intentional injury and disturbing public order. However, his family and other accomplices bribed officials to have him released, which sparked public anger.
During the anti-crime campaign Sun was retried and last year, the court upheld the execution sentence. He was executed in February this year. Those involved in the bribery were given prison sentences.

This shows how the campaign has been integrated with the fight against corruption. It has also addressed economic crimes such as illegal lending and using violence to collect debt, as well as environmental crimes such as illegal mining along the Yangtze River.
According to the National Office Against Organized Crime, by the end of August, law enforcement authorities had busted about 3,500 criminal rings and over 10,500 groups involved in bullying activities. Also, nearly 4,500 mafia-style organizations in rural areas had been broken up.
The crackdown enhanced social security and contributed to the battle against poverty.
