Ms. Jane Sun and the Dean of the Joint Institute, Prof. Chien-Pin Chen, signing an agreement to mark the launch of the scholarship

Trip.com Group announced its Trip.com Group International Leadership Programme, a scholarship exchange programme to foster cross-cultural understanding and educational exchanges, hosted by the University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (the Joint Institute).

This programme will provide scholarships to support students, covering tuition fees, international flights, accommodation, and culturally immersive activities across Shanghai and other regions of Asia.

Whether it’s a history or culture tour, or taking part in a local cooking experience, students will explore the charms of the country as part of their study experience. In addition, they will receive a monthly stipend to support their living expenses during the semester.

Recognising the power of travel as a bridge across different countries, the programme supports youths in gaining an international, well-rounded education and provides them with rich opportunities to build friendships across borders. Through cross-cultural interactions, these exchanges serve as building blocks, laying the groundwork for mutual understanding and cooperation between nations and the younger generation who are going to shape tomorrow’s world.

"When people travel further away, the world is brought closer. We believe in the transformative power of travel to connect people and cultures," said Ms. Jane Sun, CEO of Trip.com Group. "Through this scholarship programme, we aim to empower students to become global citizens and leaders who can bridge divides and promote mutual understanding."

Prof. Chien-Pin Chen, Dean of the Joint Institute, also shared: "We are committed to building a world-class institute for nurturing future leaders with global visions. This scholarship programme represents our dedication to equipping a new generation of leaders with the skills and experiences needed to thrive in an interconnected world."

Applications are open to students coming from partner universities who demonstrate strong academic performance. Candidates will be asked to submit an additional application letter, along with a personal photo, CV, and recommendation letter from a faculty member, industry leader, mentor, or supervisor.

The first batch of the semester exchange programme will start from the 2024 Fall term at the Joint Institute. Currently, applications are open, with a deadline for submission on May 1. The selected students will be announced following a comprehensive review process.
