"Internet Plus", cybersecurity and innovation were some of the main topics at this year's World Internet Conference (WIC) which was carried out in Wuzhen, east China's Zhejiang Province, from December 16-18.

During the opening ceremony's keynote speech, China's President Xi Jinping said that China is preparing to implement cyber development and big data strategies, as well as the "Internet Plus" action plan during the next five years.

How will Chinese Internet trailblazers think about the challenges and future of this industry in China? Here is a collection of statements made regarding these challenges:

Charles Chao, Chairman and CEO of Sina

China's Internet capabilities are advancing at the same speed as those of developed countries, thanks to the financial and policy support of the Chinese Government. China and the United States are world leaders in the development of the Internet's potential. The Chinese market is also big enough for large-scale Internet companies. However, the rule of law in this field lags far behind the technology's progress, which creates impediments in this industry's path toward a positive future. Although the situation has improved in recent years, legislation and the enforcement of the law needs to be revamped in order to meet the demands of a changing Internet landscape.

Zhou Hongyi, President and CEO of Qihoo 360

The world has arrived at the doorstep of the Internet of Things era. However, the question of cybersecurity is getting more and more serious. The Internet faces four security problems that must be addressed: personal privacy security, personal payment security, personal safety and enterprise safety. In light of such security threats, the Internet industry should become more open and cooperative with each other.

Pony Ma, Chairman and CEO of Tencent

Thanks to the mobile-Internet era, the Internet has become increasingly centered on individuals. China's Internet industry is breaking into a boundless new ecology featuring people-oriented and things-connected technologies. This new network will naturally evolve as Internet technology and its business models become more interconnected.

Lei Jun, Founder and CEO of Xiaomi

During the era of the Internet centered on personal computers, China lagged behind the U.S. Now, in the mobile Internet era, China and the U.S. are currently tied for the position of top developer. In the Internet of Things era, China will lead the world due to their advantages in the supply chain and in manufacturing. I hope that the Second World Internet Conference will be held successfully, become a grand global Internet meeting, and show China's Internet advantage off to the whole world.
