Jiang-Clinton Summit

Chinese President Jiang Zemin and visiting US President Bill Clinton held formal talks on June 27 in Beijing. They had an in-depth exchange of views on bilateral relations and major international and regional issues and reached wide and important consensus. The talks were described as "positive, constructive and fruitful",signifying the beginning of a new era in the development of Sino-US relations.

Yangtze and Nenjiang River Valleys Hit by Serious Flood Disasters

Over the summer, China's Yangtze and Nenjiang River valleys were hit by flood disasters of unprecedented intensity. Thanks to the concerted efforts of the People's Liberation Army and civilians, the floodwaters were beaten back in the end.
