The first high-level, nongovernmental talks between China's mainland and Taiwan since 1949 were concluded on April 29, with both sides agreeing in principle to strengthen economic exchanges and cooperation.
Wang Daohan, Chairman of the Mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), and Koo Chen-fu, Chairman of the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), signed four agreements, including agreements on the substance of the Wang-Koo talks, regular contact between the two organizations, notary procedures and compensation for lost registered mail between the mainland and Taiwan.
