The Hong Kong Science Park on Monday named an auditorium after Nobel laureate in physics Charles Kao.

The auditorium, an egg-shaped landmark building, has 288 seats and is fit with advanced equipment, including optical fiber cables, projectors and screens. It has provided the venue for seminars and meetings since its inception 2007.

Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Chief Executive Donald Tsang said at the ceremony that the HKSAR government would strive to grow innovation and technology into an important budding industry through infrastructural and policy support.

"Professor Kao's achievement has promoted youngsters' interest in innovation and technology, and enhanced public awareness of the importance of technology to improving life and social development, " he said.

Kao shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics for his achievement in optical fiber cable researches. Born in Shanghai, Kao received high school education in Hong Kong and headed the Chinese University of Hong Kong in late 1980s and early 1990s.
